Elise lives with her family in a house next to the railway tracks.
When she's not at school, she helps her mother around the house or goes for walks with her dog, Dicko.
At a time when teachers were allowed to wield rulers on their pupils' fingers, pupils were sometimes the victims of abuse.
This is what happens to the young girl, the whipping boy appointed by her teacher, and her classmates on a daily basis. But one day an academic inspector pays them an unexpected visit.
